The Design – Dyson V15 Detect Is Lighter

Speaking of the essential dissimilarity, the Gen5 Detect weighs 7.72 lbs (3.5 Kg), one pound heavier than the V15 Detect, which weighs 6.83 lbs (i.e., 3.1 Kg). You can feel the difference, but it’s not noteworthy when assessing the benefits of GEN5. We doubt that this additional weight might be due to the extra battery, which is in discussion down the line.

Typically, vacuum cleaner measurements don’t play a vital role in comparison. However, this time, we felt it was worth citing. There’s not much of a contrast in lengths and widths. The main difference is in height, with the Gen5 Detect slightly taller at 50.2 inches compared to the V15 Detect’s 49.6 inches.

As V15 Detect is lighter, you might feel it is more convenient. But that is wrong. Here is the top ease-to-use upgrade:

When using the V15 Detect, you need to press and hold the button to keep the vacuum cleaner in action. In contrast, the Gen5 Detect has a single button that turns the device on and off, adding more comfort when handling.

Both devices come equipped with a screen display. It shows the evidence of microscopic dirt particles trapped in micro values. This feature is not in Tineco and Dreametech

Although the design of those micro values-display differs, the information provided is the same (one is displayed horizontally, and the other vertically), showing data for particles collected in percentages ranging from 10 to 500 µm.

Eager about how diminutive these values of 10 to 500 µm are? Check out the below table. We have included some examples for clear insight.

Object/ParticleApproximate Size (µm)
Pollen Grains10 – 100
Human Blood Cells 7-30 (Red Blood Cells),10-20 (White Blood Cells)
Fine Dust Particles10 – 50 (PM10)
Bacteria 0.5 – 5
Yeast Cells 5 – 10
Microplastics10 – 500
Fine Sand Grains 100 – 500

Let’s get to the core of the comparison.

Dyson Gen5 Detect has efficient HEPA

Just above, we discussed micro-particles, and when it comes to capturing those smaller particles, the Dyson Gen5 Detect proves more effective, thanks to its HEPA filtration system, which allows the vacuum to trap 99.99% of microscopic particles.

In contrast, the V15 Detect lacks HEPA filtration. While it does feature a whole filtration system, which is more outstanding than other peers, it doesn’t match up to the Gen5 Detect in this regard.

From our experience comparing vacuum cleaners, we know that you have mixed opinions after hearing the “HEPA” as many vacuum buyers say that HEPA is expensive and sometimes even not available for replacement.

That’s a valid concern, but Dyson has sorted this issue thoughtfully. In the Gen5 Detect, the HEPA filter is washable, eliminating the need for immediate replacement as soon as it appears dirty.

However, it’s still our recommendation to consider replacing the HEPA filter every year.

Both vacuums detect microscopic particles, but is that enough? Will the particles they trap remain sealed? Or could they leak into your home when emptying the dirt bin?

Let’s uncover.

The Dirt Bin & Ejection Mechanism

To empty the dirt bin, remove all the accessories, hold it over the trash, and click the red-colored dirt release button. This action opens the lid and effectively disposes of the dirt.

Both the vacuums boast a 750 ml dirt bin, an adequate volume. However, we expect a significant improvement here. A one-liter capacity would be even more convenient and take longer to empty.

Furthermore, the bins are sealed in a way that no dirt escapes.

When it comes to cleaning, Dyson’s ejection mechanism ranks top in hygienic terms. It expels the dirt directly into the trash bin, eliminating the need for manual handling or direct contact.

Put the dirt bin downwards to the trash bin after removing all the accessories and click the red-colored dirt release button, which opens the lid and disposes of the dirt.

Run Time

The charging time for both the Dyson V15 Detect and Gen5 Detect is similar, taking approximately 4.5 hours to reach a full charge from 0 to 100%.

An advantage of the Gen5 Detect model is its extended runtime. It features a ten-cell battery pack, delivering an additional ten minutes of function compared to the V15 Detect.

Runtime Details:-

  • Dyson V15 Detect: Up To 60 Minutes
  • Dyson Gen5 Detect: Up To 70 Minutes

It’s important to note that these running times are not fixed values, so we expressed them above as ‘up to’ terms. The actual runtime can vary based on factors such as dirt load, the cleaning modes assigned, and the extensions in use.

Cleaning Modes

There are three cleaning modes in both the Dyson vacuum cleaners.

  1. Auto Mode: It’s important to note that this is your typical ‘normal default’ mode. Dyson V15 Detect and Gen5 Detect are intelligent vacuum cleaners equipped with sensors that detect dirt load. Based on this real-time detection, the vacuums automatically adjust the suction power to deliver optimal cleaning performance.
  2. Eco Mode: If you prefer conserving power while maintaining balanced suction throughout your cleaning session, switch to the Eco Mode.
  3. Boost Mode: Within the vacuum cleaner domain, you might hear more like a “max mode” on various devices. Yes, the same picture here. Boost mode is useful when you feel dirt everywhere and need increased suction power. This mode is particularly effective for cleaning carpets and removing pet hair. Note that it drains battery power more quickly than Eco and Auto Modes.

Based on our experience, when it comes to choosing between the available three modes, Auto mode is the go-to option for routine cleanups; the best balance of performance and energy efficiency.

Suction Power – Gen5Detect is Stronger

Although Gen5 is known for its exceptional suction, it doesn’t mean that V15 Detect falls short in performance. Both V15 Detect and Gen5 Detect are with root cyclone technology, which causes the internal hyperdymium motor to rotate around 125,000 times per minute.

Rotations Per Second (RPS) = Rotations Per Minute (RPM) / 60, which means it spins roughly 2080 times per second. Imagine the remarkable suction force these detect vacuums can induce.

However, with all the above adding up, Gen5 Detect takes the stage further in motor design, allowing it to deliver slightly more suction power than the V15 Detect. Specifically, the V15 Detect generates 240 Air Watts of suction, while the Gen5 boasts an unusual 262 Air Watts.

Accessories – Gen5Detect Takes The Lead

Both models come with accessories created for various functions, and it’s important to note that these accessories are the same with both Dyson Detect models.

However, there is one notable accessory distinction between the two, which we’ll cover below after providing a precise illustration of each accessory.

Here is the list of commonly shared accessories of these models:

Charger & Wall Dock: It’s lifelike to presume that the wall dock, designed for easy charging and storage of Dyson vacuums, might make the charger not much of a use. However, the charger serves a vital purpose when you’re not near the wall dock.

The wall dock is affixed to the wall using screws, offering an all-packed charging and storage solution. The Dyson Detect vacuums have a dedicated power port on the back side of the cleaner body, allowing you to charge the device directly. You can take the vacuum and charger everywhere, ignoring the wall dock.

Dusting Brushes: Dyson V15 Detect and Gen5 Detect come with two types of dusting brushes: the Mini Dusting Brush and the Stubborn Dirt Brush. These brushes are for clearing dust and dirt from surfaces where suction alone may not suffice.

Strike off the brush on objects. It loosens the dirt, then vacuum it.

The Stubborn Dirt Brush is perfect for tackling tough spots like car interiors, where dirt can be deeply entrenched.

On the other hand, the Soft Dusting Brush is for fragile objects and surfaces that need soft cleaning.

Tough Spots (Stubborn Dirt Brush)Delicate Surfaces (Soft Dusting Brush)
Car InteriorsElectronics and Screens
Stove Grates and Burner Pans Glassware and Crystal
Outdoor Grill GratesDelicate Fabrics and Upholstery

Greasy Kitchen AppliancesChandeliers and Light Fixtures
Tile Grout and Heavy Traffic Areas Keyboards and Computer Components
Patio Furniture and Outdoor EquipmentPlants and Floral Arrangements
Garage Floors and Workshop Counters Artwork and Frames
Workshop Tools and Machinery Decorative Collectibles

It is simple: Don’t use the stubborn dusting brush on delicate or easily scratched surfaces and objects.

Combination Tool: With this tool, you get two functionalities in one – a wide nozzle and a dusting brush.

Hair Screw Accessory: Whether dealing with long human hair or your pet’s shedding season, attach this accessory to your vacuum cleaning head. Its striking design assures efficient hair pickup without the hassle of tangling. It is purpose-built for this precise task.

Now let’s delve into the vital cleaner heads:

Fluffy Optic Cleaner Head

This accessory has a remarkable purpose. On the right side of the cleaner head is a light illuminating option that lets the vacuum cleaner head drive, showing the front dust. Even the tiniest specks of dirt are seeable when cleaning, so you won’t miss any place.

Digital Motorbar Cleaner Head

If you don’t find the above illuminating cleaner head applicable, consider attaching this motorbar cleaner head for cleaning. What sets this cleaner head apart is its specialized detangling system – it cuts hair that may become entangled with the brush roller inside.

It also features a suction control bar button on the front, allowing you to customize suction as required (Dyson Detects have auto-adjusted suction).

Difference: Dyson Gen5Detect has Built-In Dusting and Crevice Tool

Both Dyson Detect vacuums can be converted to handheld mode, simplifying the cleaning of challenging narrow spaces, sofas, and fans. With a simple click on the body end of the vacuum wand, you can transition to handheld mode.

With the V15 Detect, you will get only the crevice tool. In the case of the Gen5 Detect, the crevice tool has an attached dusting brush. This feature enables you to effectively eliminate dirt before initiating the suction – a functionality absent in the V15 Detect model.

Closing Thoughts & Decision

The Dyson Gen5Detect boasts superior suction strength and an unmatched HEPA filtration method, making it the flawless option for those who look for the highest performance and developed features.

While the V15 Detect is a pro model, the Gen5 Detect is the super pro version.

If the added features of the Gen5 Detect align with your necessities, it’s a compelling option. However, if you lean more towards budget and the added features are not applicable, the V15 Detect remains a solid choice.
